Pulmonary Fellowship

Rotation Sites

Rotations for the Pulmonary Disease Program will take place at the following sites:

Our sponsoring institution, Southwest Healthcare Medical Education Consortium, comprises five acute care hospitals recognized for quality of care and patient safety. The Pulmonary Disease Program takes place at four of these facilities — Temecula Valley Hospital (TVH), Southwest Healthcare Inland Valley Hospital (IVH), Southwest Healthcare Rancho Springs Hospital (RSH) and Corona Regional Medical Center (CRMC). Over the course of their training, fellows may provide care for patients across these sites.

The primary clinical site, Temecula Valley Hospital, was built in 2013 and offers a comprehensive range of services similar to hospitals in large metropolitan areas. The hospital offers specialty services including Interventional Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, and Neuro-interventional services. TVH is also designated as a STEMI Receiving Center and Stroke Center with Thrombectomy capabilities. The Joint Commission has designated the hospital as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center. In addition to ED shifts at TVH, fellows will also complete a two-week rotation dedicated to ED Ultrasound, as well as rotations in Orthopedics.

Other outpatient rotation experiences include Community Medicine, Palliative Care, Cardiology, Pediatrics, Geriatric Medicine, Orthopedics, Sports Medicine, Women’s Health, Dermatology, Addiction Medicine, Pain Management, Otolaryngology, Urology, Ophthalmology, Practice Management, and other medical and surgical subspecialties.

Didactics

A variety of didactic conferences are scheduled for fellows throughout the year. Fellows will learn together at weekly lectures with a variety of topics and formats including Board Review, Ambulatory Clinic Conference, Clinical Pathology Conference, Grand Rounds, Journal Club, Morbidity and Mortality, Resident Report, Peer Teaching, Scholarly Activity Conference, etc.

Research and Scholarly Activity

Our program seeks to advance our fellows’ knowledge of basic principles of research, including how research is conducted, evaluated, explained to patients and applied to patient care. Fellows will develop their research abilities through various activities including Journal Club, Population Health didactics, and Clinical Case Conference didactic sessions.

Fellows are assigned faculty mentors to advise and guide them with their research and scholarly activities. Because of its importance, fellows will be allotted time during non-call rotations for scholarly activity as well as the ability to request elective time for scholarly pursuits.

All fellows are expected to participate in scholarly activity. Fellows are to complete at least two Scholarly Activity Projects over the course of their training, one of which must be a quality improvement project. Fellows will participate in hospital performance improvement committees and be exposed to ongoing activities taking place at the hospital such as patient safety efforts and quality improvement.

Fellows will present their Scholarly Activity Projects during didactic sessions and are encouraged to submit their projects for presentation and/or publication at professional local, regional or national meetings or in peer-reviewed journals.
