Obstetrics and Gynecology

Rotation Sites

Rotations for the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program will take place at the following sites:

Our sponsoring institution, Southwest Healthcare Medical Education Consortium, comprises five acute care hospitals recognized for quality of care and patient safety. The Obstetrics and Gynecology Program takes place primarily at Rancho Springs Hospital in Murrieta, California.

The primary clinical site, Rancho Springs Hospital, offers a comprehensive range of services similar to hospitals in large metropolitan areas. At our primary site, residents will rotate on labor and delivery, participate in gynecologic surgery and inpatient care, assist in and perform gynecologic oncology surgeries and outpatient care, and perform consultations in the emergency room. This primary site will be where the residents cover weekend call shifts and their night float rotations. While on labor and delivery, on weekend call assignments, and on night float rotations, their primary faculty will be the in-house OB/GYN hospitalist group.

Other rotation experiences include REI at Kaiser Fontana, family planning at Planned Parenthood, urogynecology at Hemet Medical Center and gynecologic oncology with UCSD faculty.

Notes
  • Paid Time Off (PTO): Residents are allowed four weeks (20 days) per academic year during Gyn, Ob/Gyn, Ambulatory, Electives, Family Planning, Urogyn, REI, and Gyn/Onc. See Salary & Benefits for more information.
  • Potential Electives include additional time in any of our subspecialty rotations or other medical rotations within the Southwest Healthcare Medical Education Consortium network.

Research and Scholarly Activity

Our program seeks to advance our residents’ knowledge of basic principles of research, including how research is conducted, evaluated, explained to patients and applied to patient care. Residents will develop their research abilities through various activities including Journal Club, Population Health didactics, and Clinical Case Conference didactic sessions.

Residents are assigned faculty mentors to advise and guide them with their research and scholarly activities. Because of its importance, residents will be allotted time during non-call rotations for scholarly activity as well as the ability to request elective time for scholarly pursuits.

All residents are expected to participate in scholarly activity. Residents are to complete at least two Scholarly Activity Projects over the course of their training, one of which must be a quality improvement project. Residents will participate in hospital performance improvement committees and be exposed to ongoing activities taking place at the hospital such as patient safety efforts and quality improvement.

Residents will present their Scholarly Activity Projects during didactic sessions and are encouraged to submit their projects for presentation and/or publication at professional local, regional or national meetings or in peer-reviewed journals.
