Rotation Sites

Rotations for the General Surgery Residency Program will take place at the following sites:

Our sponsoring institution, Southwest Healthcare Medical Education Consortium, comprises five medical centers recognized for quality of care and patient safety. The General Surgery Program takes place at four of these facilities.

The primary clinical site, Temecula Valley Hospital, was built in 2013 and offers a comprehensive range of services similar to hospitals in large metropolitan areas. The hospital offers specialty services including Interventional Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery and Neuro-interventional services. TVH is also designated as a STEMI Receiving Center and Stroke Center with Thrombectomy capabilities. The Joint Commission has designated the hospital as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center.

Notes
  • Paid Time Off (PTO): Residents are allowed four weeks (20 days) per academic year during outpatient rotations and are allowed five days per block. See Salary & Benefits for more information.
  • Potential Elective rotations to help personal and professional development include these surgical specialties:
    • Trauma surgery
    • General surgery
    • Vascular surgery
    • Anesthesiology
    • Cardiothoracic
    • Advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery

Didactics

Didactics are very robust and broadly encompassing. Protected half-day a week will be offered and will include morbidity mortality conference, reviewing part of a surgical textbook chapter, SCORE curriculum, basic science lecture and grand rounds. Journal club will take place on a monthly basis.

Research and Scholarly Activity

Our program seeks to advance our residents’ knowledge of basic principles of research, including how research is conducted, evaluated, explained to patients and applied to patient care. Residents are assigned faculty mentors to advise and guide them with their research and scholarly activities. Because of its importance, residents will be allotted time during non-call rotations for scholarly activity as well as the ability to request elective time for scholarly pursuits.

All residents are expected and encouraged to participate in scholarly activity. Residents will participate in hospital performance improvement committees and be exposed to ongoing activities taking place at the hospital such as patient safety efforts and quality improvement.

Residents will present their Scholarly Activity Projects during didactic sessions and are encouraged to submit their projects for presentation and/or publication at professional local, regional or national meetings or in peer-reviewed journals.
